USS S-38 (SS-143) was was built by Union Iron Works of San Francisco and commissioned 11 May 1923. She was awarded Yangtze Service Medal, China Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three battle stars, and World War II Victory Medal. USS S-38 was decommissioned in San Diego in December 1944, and was sunk as a bombing target.
